If you love the peace and tranquility of being underwater but want the benefits of using less gear, Freediving may be for you! This is the perfect opportunity to dip your toes into Freediving with the addition of our new Freediving Instructor, Sophie Duncan!
"Hi I'm Sophie! I was born in England, and raised in South Florida. A large portion of my childhood was spent on a transatlantic flight between the two. This transient lifestyle set me up for a future of travel and adventure.
It came as no surprise to my parents when I told them I wanted to go to the University of Hawaii given that I grew up practically in, near, or underwater. My experience at university taught me a great deal more than my Bachelor's in Journalism and minor in Marine Science. This was not a typical college experience. I spent my weekends at beach bonfires and my college side hustle was teaching SCUBA. This experience pushed me far beyond my comfort zone back on the east coast. Every year of college, I made it my goal to earn a new SCUBA certification, by the time I graduated I was a PADI MSDT and on my way to Atlanta.
Immediately after graduating university I was offered a position at the Georgia Aquarium as a SCUBA diver. Five years and two promotions later, I was running the dive and swim program alongside my fiancé - now husband. The best part about my job, besides diving with sharks every day, was filming and editing underwater video. I earned my HSA Instructor certification and I became a RAID Sport Rebreather Instructor on the Poseidon Se7en. During my time at the Aquarium, I realized that I could be of value if I expanded my knowledge in freediving. I put in a professional development proposal to my boss, and my freediving education was funded. Learning to freedive was the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life, and I can't wait to teach others this beautiful sport!"
